$564 million heart hospital breaks ground

Excavation works have begun on Australia’s first ever specialist heart hospital at Monash University, Clayton Campus, Melbourne

The hospital will provide space for new cardiac treatment, education and training and research, with learning spaces for more than 300 undergraduate, 260 post graduate and 20 PhD students a year.

90 per cent of materials used for the construction will be sourced from local suppliers and will create over 1700 jobs as the $564 million hospital is delivered.

The hospital will have the capacity for 206 beds when it opens and allow for up to 2150 cardiac surgeries, 13,500 cardiac laboratory procedures and 108,000 consultations each year.

“The new hospital right here in Clayton will save thousands of lives and further cement Victoria’s reputation as a world leader in health and medical research,” Member for Oakleigh Steve Dimopoulos.

Victoria’s regional patients will also benefit from the hospital, with telehealth facilities which link specialist with patients and local doctors, eliminating the requirement to travel for their specialist appointments.

Monash Health and Monash University  is expected to deliver the hospital in 2022.
