Exciting times are ahead for the Coopers Plains community in Queensland, with the green light given to a major infrastructure project designed to improve safety and ease traffic congestion. The $399 million upgrade, which is set to begin in 2025, will address long-standing concerns about the Coopers Plains rail level crossing, bringing much-needed relief to both drivers and rail passengers.
At the heart of this project is the construction of a new elevated three-way intersection over the rail line, seamlessly connecting Boundary Road and Orange Grove Road. This crucial development will allow the free flow of trains and vehicles, eliminating the frustrating waits and potential hazards associated with the current level crossing. For the community, this means shorter travel times and fewer delays, improving the daily commute for countless residents.
But the benefits don’t stop there. In addition to reducing congestion, this project is about creating a safer, more liveable environment for the Coopers Plains community. New active transport facilities are planned, including dedicated pedestrian footpaths and bike riding connections. Once complete, these new pathways will ensure residents can cross the rail line safely and easily, fostering a healthier, more connected neighbourhood.
Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Bart Mellish, has highlighted the project’s role in improving the overall liveability of the area. By eliminating the rail level crossing and introducing safer, more efficient transport options, the upgrades are expected to significantly reduce the risk of accidents and improve the quality of life for local residents.
“Not only will the overpass improve safety and bust congestion, but it will also enhance the community’s connectivity,” Mellish explained. “These new facilities will allow Coopers Plains residents to walk or ride their bikes safely, without the worry of waiting for trains or traffic.”
The construction phase is set to begin with enabling works in mid-2025. This will include clearing vegetation, preparing land, demolishing properties, and relocating essential services such as electricity, gas, and water. These early steps lay the groundwork for the larger project, ensuring that once construction begins in earnest, it can proceed smoothly and efficiently.
Procurement is already underway, with construction companies encouraged to register their interest in taking on the ambitious project by late September 2024. This marks an exciting opportunity for builders, planners, and engineers to come together and shape the future of Coopers Plains.
In short, the Coopers Plains rail overpass project is more than just a construction job—it’s a transformative initiative that will improve safety, connectivity, and quality of life for all who live and travel through the area. By 2025, this bustling corner of Queensland will be on its way to becoming a safer, faster, and more vibrant community for everyone.
