New South Wales premier Gladys Berejiklian and minister for transport Andrew Constance welcomed TBM Nancy to Waterloo Metro Station, after tunnelling 3.1 kilometres from Marrickville.
Nancy started digging in October and will continue tunnelling towards Barangaroo via new metro stations at Central, Pitt Street and Martin Place. Mega borer mum Shirl is not far behind, only hundred metres from breaking through at Waterloo.
Nancy’s tunnel breakthrough is a momentous accomplishment for the country’s biggest public transport project. TBM Nancy has carved through about 304,000 tonnes of rock in less than six months, enough to fill 47 swimming pools.
“This is history in the making as we get on with the job of delivering turn-up-and-go Metro services up to every two minutes from Chatswood, under the Harbour and CBD and onto Bankstown,” Berejiklian said.
By 2024, Sydney will have 31 metro stations along a 66 kilometre rail line with the capacity to move 40,000 customers an hour.
