Victorian independent and Catholic schools are set to receive a $402 million funding boost as the state government invests into educational infrastructure. The financial backing will also support the removal of dangerous asbestos and cladding in non-government schools.
The funding is part of a record $1.82 billion investment in Victoria’s education infrastructure in the Victorian Budget 2019/20 – delivering on the Government’s promise to make Victoria the Education State.
Minister for Education James Merlino and Member for Niddrie Ben Carroll paid a visit to the new Helene Province building at Ave Maria College, to open applications for the first round of the $402 million Non-Government Schools Capital Fund.
This contribution to non-government schools more than triples the capital funding support provided to the sector since 2015.
“Every student deserves access to modern school facilities, and with more than one third of Victorian students attending non-government schools we are making sure they benefit from our record investment into creating the Education State,” Merlino said.
The Victorian Government contributed $500,000 towards the construction of the Helene Province building, a three-storey learning centre including classrooms and a refurbished library.
Victoria is growing faster than any other state or territory with schools needed to accommodate more than 90,000 extra students by 2022.
