The project was announced in November of 2020, with both the Victorian and Federal Governments committing $2 billion each. The addition to the line aims to reduce travel time between Geelong and Melbourne by 15 minutes.
The first stage of construction is expected to create 2,800 jobs.

The Geelong Fast Rail is the first part of the Federal Governments 20-year faster rail plan.
