Work is now underway to prepare for the laying of track through the tunnels on the $11 billion Metro Tunnel Project in Melbourne, Victoria. This project is the city’s largest-ever and is funded largely by the Victorian Government.
The Metro Tunnel Project is set to link the Sunbury line in Melbourne’s northwest with Cranbourne and Pakenham lines in the southeast via twin nine-kilometre tunnels and five new stations. It will also untangle the City Loop and ensure trains run more often, saving 30-40 minutes for return journeys.
The excavation of the two tunnels began in May of 2021 and the track laying is projected to take a full year.
“ The Metro Tunnel will slash travel times and create space for hundreds of thousands more passengers across the network, making travel faster, more reliable and more comfortable,” Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews said.
The project is set to be completed in 2025.
