The significant $662.5 million expansion of the Bruce Highway, a vital transport artery linking Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast, has been completed. This project marks a milestone in enhancing the infrastructure that supports Queensland’s rapidly growing regions.
Spanning an impressive 11 kilometres, the large-scale project was carried out between the Caboolture-Bribie Island Road and Steve Irwin Way (Exit 163) at Elimbah. It proudly stands as the 466th upgrade on the Bruce Highway, a testament to the ongoing commitment to improving Queensland’s road network.
The project involved over 600 dedicated workers who collaborated to deliver this crucial upgrade. Their hard work and expertise have not only improved the highway itself but also enhanced several interchanges and exit ramps along this busy stretch. A standout feature of the upgrade includes the construction of 10 new bridges. These structures are designed to be higher, wider, and stronger, capable of withstanding a one-in-100-year flood event, ensuring the safety and reliability of the highway for decades to come.
Daily, more than 65,000 vehicles traverse this section of the highway, highlighting its significance as a key transport route for both locals and visitors. The expansion includes additional lanes which have been progressively opened to the public since 2022, significantly improving traffic flow and safety for thousands of motorists each day.
The funding for this essential upgrade was a collaborative effort between the Federal and Queensland governments, with the Federal Government contributing a substantial $530 million. This partnership underscores the importance of federal and state cooperation in addressing critical infrastructure needs.
Ali King, Member for Pumicestone, has expressed enthusiasm about the completion of the works, recognising the significant impact it will have on the community. “Extra lanes on this section of the Bruce will be a game changer for locals – this will help ease congestion and provide a quicker, safer journey for commuters and travellers now and well into the future,” said King.
This project is part of a broader series of upgrades planned for the Bruce Highway, particularly on the Sunshine Coast, where infrastructure development is crucial to support the area’s growth and prosperity. These enhancements are designed not only to improve daily commutes but also to bolster the local economy by providing easier access and safer travel conditions for all road users.
As the community celebrates this milestone, the focus remains on the ongoing developments and improvements along the Bruce Highway. Each project not only contributes to the safety and efficiency of our transport networks but also inspires careers in construction and infrastructure, aligning perfectly with the commitment to support and develop talent in these critical industries.
For those navigating the new and improved sections of the Bruce Highway, the journey just became a lot smoother and safer. This is not just an infrastructure success; it’s a community success story, one that will benefit Queenslanders for generations to come.
