New Social and Affordable Housing Projects in Heidelberg West

Victoria is making significant strides in addressing the need for social and affordable housing, with a new project set to deliver 104 homes in Heidelberg West. This development is part of the broader Big Housing Build program, an ambitious initiative by the Victorian Government aimed at providing secure and affordable housing for thousands of residents.

The Heidelberg West housing project is a collaborative effort between the state and federal governments, underscoring the importance of joint ventures in tackling housing shortages. Known as the Bell Bardia Project, this initiative is set to deliver a mix of one, two, and three-bedroom homes. The primary beneficiaries will include those at risk of homelessness, victims and survivors of domestic and family violence, and pensioners, ensuring that some of the most vulnerable members of the community receive much-needed support.

Located just 10 kilometres from Melbourne’s CBD, the Heidelberg West site is ideally positioned with easy access to shops, public transport, services, and schools. The nearby Austin Hospital further enhances the location’s appeal, providing essential healthcare services within close proximity. The design phase of the project is set to include a period for community feedback, scheduled from July to September this year. This participatory approach ensures that the needs and preferences of future residents and the broader community are considered, fostering a sense of ownership and inclusivity.

A key feature of the new homes will be their energy-efficient designs, aimed at helping renters save on power bills. The Bell Bardia Project is part of the $5.3-billion Big Housing Build program, which has already seen substantial progress. To date, more than 9400 homes have been completed or are nearing completion across Victoria, with over 4000 Victorians already moved into their new homes. In addition to the Heidelberg West project, social housing developments are underway in other Melbourne suburbs, including Prahran and Brunswick. These efforts are complemented by a $1-billion Regional Housing Fund, which aims to deliver at least 1300 new homes across regional Victoria. Furthermore, the federal government’s Social Housing Accelerator will provide $500 million to construct another 769 homes, reinforcing the commitment to expanding affordable housing options.

Looking ahead, the Victorian Government has set an ambitious target of building 800,000 homes over the next decade. This goal reflects a comprehensive approach to addressing housing needs, ensuring that a broad spectrum of the population, from low-income earners to those facing homelessness, has access to safe and affordable housing.
