Melbourne’s long-awaited airport rail link is finally gaining momentum, bringing a surge of infrastructure activity and investment opportunities to the city’s booming west. In a significant move, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed that the Commonwealth would inject $7 billion into the transformative project, ensuring it becomes a reality after years of delays.

The rail link, a crucial component of the broader Suburban Rail Loop, will revolutionise how Victorians travel to and from Melbourne Airport. With an estimated $5 billion price tag, the project will directly connect Tullamarine Airport to Melbourne’s Metro network via Sunshine Station. Additionally, a further $2 billion has been allocated to upgrade Sunshine Station—set to become a major transport hub supporting both regional and metropolitan passengers.

For years, a dispute between the Victorian Government and Melbourne Airport over whether the station should be built underground or overground created setbacks. After extensive negotiations, the airport has now agreed to an overground design, allowing construction to move forward. However, the debate caused delays and cost escalations, meaning the timeline has been pushed back.

Despite these hurdles, Albanese remains committed to delivering the much-needed rail link. “Melbourne Airport needs a rail link,” he stated. “Our government will partner with the Victorian Government to fund and build a rail link to Melbourne Airport. The Victorian Government will bring forward their funding to kickstart work.”

This announcement has already sparked economic activity in Sunshine, a key beneficiary of the project. Hotel group Veriu has unveiled plans for new short-stay accommodation directly opposite Sunshine Station, catering to the influx of business travellers and tourists expected once the link is operational.

Sunshine Station itself is undergoing a dramatic transformation, with significant upgrades covering more than six kilometres from West Footscray to Albion. These include the construction of three new rail bridges, additional tracks, modernised signalling systems, and the realignment of passenger and freight lines. Two new regional platforms will enhance connectivity, while a newly developed Albion Station will feature an accessible concourse with lifts and stairs.

The upgrades will solidify Sunshine’s role as a major transport interchange, supporting over 40 train services per hour to accommodate Melbourne’s rapidly expanding western suburbs and airport traffic. Future plans also include the potential electrification of rail connections to Melton, further enhancing connectivity.

Construction on the Sunshine Station upgrades is slated to begin in early 2026, with completion expected by 2030. While it has been a long road to this point, the long-term benefits for commuters, businesses, and the construction industry are undeniable. With billions of dollars now committed and works underway, Melbourne’s airport rail link is finally on track to reshape the city’s transport future.

For those in construction and infrastructure, this is a golden era of opportunity—Victoria’s Big Build is creating thousands of jobs, unlocking new precincts, and cementing Melbourne’s status as a global city with world-class transport connections.
