The $500 million redevelopment of Westfield Doncaster is set to create around 2000 jobs Victoria wide. The massive redevelopment will include a 14-story gateway, a two-story premium shopping complex, thousands of new car parking spaces and a larger bus interchange.
Victorian Planning Minister Richard Wynne said, “Melbourne is already the nation’s retail capital and this major expansion will cement its reputation for the years to come,”
“This project will create thousands of jobs, draw thousands of shoppers from across the world, and will be a major boost to Victoria’s economy.”
Retail is one of Victoria’s largest sources of employment, creating more than 300,000 jobs across Melbourne and regional Victoria. The Australian Bureau of Statistics found Victorians spent $78.9 billion on retail sales just over the last year.
Scentre Group Director Development and Asset Management Stewart White said “This will be an exciting next chapter for the centre which will mark its 50th year of operation soon. The master plan will allow us to realise the full potential of the site and our aspirations to cement Westfield Doncaster as a true living centre catering to the growing Doncaster Hill community and surrounds,”
“We are looking forward to providing additional details when we lodge our planning permit for the first stage of the redevelopment, which – in line with local customer and community feedback – will be focused on increasing high-end specialty fashion, dining and entertainment, as well as our health and wellness offering.
“In the meantime, we are moving ahead with our upgrade of the dining precinct adjacent to the cinemas at Westfield Doncaster and expect to commence construction works in the coming months.”
